City square sculpture is mainly used for the decoration and beautification of city squares. It not only enriches the spiritual life of urban residents, but also adds a scenic and artistic atmosphere to the square. As an integral part of a city, this type of sculpture generally stands in the square of the city.
In theory, there are many types of sculptures in urban squares, and it seems that everything can be done. But in fact, its scope is relatively limited. It must be able to reflect the culture and spiritual style of the city, which means that it not only has certain humanistic significance, but also is easy to appreciate.
When designing urban square sculptures, certain rules must be followed. Firstly, this sculpture should reflect a certain cultural connotation. Due to the unique geographical location of urban square sculpture, many viewers, especially the surrounding residents, have been exposed to it for a long time and unconsciously accept the meaning it aims to convey. Therefore, urban square sculpture should not only have a certain regulatory role (such as regulating people's behavior), but also represent a culture that is in line with the local level but slightly higher than the local level.
Secondly, sculpture should be easy to appreciate. The so-called easy to appreciate means that people can almost understand at first glance. As a public viewing object, sculpture must be a public item, which can be slightly higher than the appreciation level of local residents, but cannot be too high. If people do not understand how to appreciate it 10 or 20 years later, then the search for beauty is nothing but a vanity project.
Thirdly, the significance and value of sculpture guidance should be positive and upward. It often represents the spiritual style of a city, which indirectly implies its thoughts and behaviors. Only sculptures with positive significance can improve the quality of residents.
Fourthly, sculpture should be coordinated with the surrounding environment. If a sculpture appears particularly abrupt in the environment and is out of place with the surrounding buildings and landscapes, it is not a landscape, on the contrary, it is a failure of the city. In this way, sculpture will lose its original most important expression of meaning or artistic value.
Nanjing Yuanyuan Sculpture has created a sculpture for the People's Square in Qiapuqia Town, Gonghe County, Qinghai Province. The concept of this sculpture is based on fully exploring the local history and culture. The entire sculpture consists of two main parts: four people lifting objects and a dance basin. The inspiration for the image of two people lifting objects comes from the painted pottery basin with two people lifting objects patterns unearthed in Tongde, Qinghai in 1905. It is a rare cultural relic dating back about 5000 years. The inner wall is painted with four symmetrical patterns and horizontal lines of two people lifting objects. The characters stand facing each other, with their backs slightly bent, and their arms extended forward to lift a circular weight. The concept is ingenious and unique, the composition is symmetrical and balanced, the pen is simple but light and powerful, the lines are thick and thin, and the character image is full and realistic. The content and artistic value it represents have milestone significance in many aspects.
The inspiration for the dance colored pottery basin comes from the excavation of Zongri's dance colored pottery basin in Tongde, Qinghai in 1905. It dates back about 4600 years and is one of the two oldest dance colored pottery artworks discovered so far in the world. The inner walls are two groups of group carnival dance patterns composed of 11 and 13 people respectively, with a wide headdress.
